Cathedral of Our Lady Immaculate
About This Museum
Now here's a thing most folks don't realize: the final resting place for nearly all of Monaco's Princes and Princesses isn't in some grand mausoleum, but right here in this cathedral. It gives the place a profound sense of being the very soul of the Rock. You can feel it in the cool, quiet air, a living history that's far more than just stone and stained glass. They still hold the big national ceremonies here, from sovereign’s masses to the wedding of Prince Albert and Charlene.
Collection Highlights
Look for the magnificent altarpiece by the Niçois painter Louis Bréa, a stunning work from around 1500. And of course, your eye is always drawn upward to the grand organ, its pipes gleaming high above the pews.
Visitor Information
Just remember to dress respectfully as it's a working church; it's closed to tourists during mass, so check the times. It sits right in the old town, impossible to miss as you wander through Monaco-Ville.
Architecture & Building
Built from white stone quarried right from La Turbie, it’s a beautiful example of Romanesque-Byzantine style, with those characteristic rounded arches and a rather majestic bell tower that watches over the city.
