Prince's Palace of Monaco
About This Museum
Everyone comes to Monaco for the glamour, but they stay at the Prince's Palace for the history. Perched high on 'The Rock' of Monaco-Ville, this isn't just a museum; it's the actual, living residence of the Grimaldi family, a fact that hits you as you walk through state apartments dripping with gilded detail and frescoed ceilings. The changing of the guard in the main courtyard is a wonderfully punctual spectacle you can't miss. Itβs a surreal and intimate glimpse into the life of a modern monarchy that has ruled from this very spot for centuries.
Collection Highlights
You'll be completely dazzled by the Throne Room with its magnificent Italian frescoes and, of course, the actual throne. The Palatine Chapel feels serene and ancient, while the York Room's 17th-century fresco depicting the fall of Phaeton is a true masterpiece you could stare at for hours.
Visitor Information
Just a heads up, you can only tour the State Apartments during certain months (typically April to October), so definitely check their schedule before you make the trip up the hill. Trust me, it's worth planning for.
Architecture & Building
From the outside, it's a formidable medieval fortress with rough stone walls and crenellations, but step inside and you're transported into an Italianate palace of the Renaissance, all lavish stucco work, grand staircases, and opulent courtyards.
