Castle of Gjirokastra
About This Museum
Perched high above the 'City of Stone,' the Castle of Gjirokastra has been watching over the valley for centuries. You can feel the weight of its history in every worn stone step. It's not just a ruin; it's the very soul of the city, a sprawling fortress that tells tales of Byzantine lords, Ottoman pashas, and even a Cold War-era American spy plane captured in its courtyard. Wandering its ramparts gives you a breathtaking view of the iconic slate-roofed houses tumbling down the hillside.
Collection Highlights
Don't miss the hulking remains of a US Air Force plane, forced to land during the Communist era, now sitting oddly amongst ancient walls. Inside, you'll find a fascinating museum of armaments and the surprisingly intact Gjirokastra Prison.
Visitor Information
The walk up is steep but absolutely worth it for the views alone. Wear good shoes and bring some water, especially in summer.
Architecture & Building
A massive stone fortress built directly into the mountain rock, showcasing centuries of additions from Byzantine foundations to Ottoman-era towers and characteristic Albanian stonework.
