Carthusian Monastery Valldemossa

About This Museum

People flock to the Cartoixa de Valldemossa not just for its serene mountain setting, but to walk in the footsteps of genius. In the winter of 1838-39, composer Frédéric Chopin and his lover, the novelist George Sand, occupied a set of cells here, and you can almost hear the faint echoes of his Preludes in the quiet rooms. Beyond this famous residency, the monastery itself is a sprawling complex of cloisters, a stunning church with a barrel-vaulted ceiling, and an ancient pharmacy lined with hundreds of ceramic jars. The entire place feels like a beautiful, melancholic poem written in stone and memory.

Collection Highlights

Chopin's own Pleyel piano, which was famously hauled over the mountains for him; George Sand's personal writings about their stay; the monastery's historic pharmacy with its vast collection of jars and remedies.

It's perched in the Tramuntana mountains, so the drive up is spectacular. Wear comfortable shoes as you'll be doing a lot of walking on old stone floors.

Architecture & Building
