Borj El Baroud
About This Museum
Tucked away near the coastal town of Diabat, Borj El Baroud stands as a silent, weathered sentinel overlooking the Atlantic. Its history is a bit mysterious, but most believe this 'Tower of Gunpowder' was built in the 18th century as part of Sultan Sidi Mohammed Ben Abdallah's coastal defenses. Walking through its thick, sun-warmed stone walls, you can almost hear the echoes of soldiers and the boom of cannons from a bygone era. It’s not a museum in the traditional sense, but rather a raw, atmospheric ruin that lets your imagination fill in the gaps.
Collection Highlights
The main exhibit is the fortress itself—its massive, crumbling ramparts and the deep, empty chambers that once held ammunition. The real highlight is climbing to the rooftop terrace for an absolutely breathtaking panoramic view where the river meets the sea.
Visitor Information
It's a bit off the beaten path, so having your own transport or a local guide is helpful. Wear sturdy shoes for climbing on uneven surfaces and don't forget your camera; the light here during sunset is simply magical.
Architecture & Building
A classic example of an 18th-century Moroccan coastal fortification, built from rugged local stone with characteristically thick walls and simple, imposing geometric forms designed for defense.
