Kasbah Museum

About This Museum

You know how most museums feel a bit separate from their city? This one is the complete opposite—it's housed right inside the ancient Kasbah fortress, so the building itself is the first and biggest exhibit. I was completely blown away by the intricate mosaics and carved wooden ceilings before I even looked at a single artifact. The collection is a fascinating mix, from prehistoric tools to beautiful 19th-century weaponry, all telling the layered story of Tangier. Wandering through its quiet, sun-drenched courtyards feels like stepping right out of the bustling medina and into a different century.

Collection Highlights

Don't miss the massive 2nd-century Roman mosaic of Venus surrounded by nymphs; it's stunningly preserved. The detailed map from 1154 CE showing the known world is also mind-blowing—you can really see how central Morocco was to everything.

Visitor Information

It's super easy to find—just head to the main square of the Kasbah. A ticket is only about 20 dirham (a couple of dollars), which is an absolute steal for what you get. Go in the morning when it's cooler and the light in the courtyards is just beautiful.

Architecture & Building

The museum is the former Sultan's palace, a classic example of Moroccan-Andalusian architecture with gorgeous geometric tilework, serene interior courtyards with fountains, and heavy, ornate wooden doors.
