Alexandria National Museum
About This Museum
I was honestly surprised to find such a beautifully curated history museum tucked away in Alexandria, all housed in this gorgeous restored palace. You start at the very top floor and literally walk your way down through time, from the Pharaonic era with its stunning jewelry and mummies, straight through to the modern age. I got completely lost in the Greco-Roman section, where they have these incredibly lifelike Fayum portraits that feel like you're staring right into someone's eyes from 2000 years ago. The whole place has this quiet, almost intimate feel—it’s not overwhelming like some of the bigger museums can be.
Collection Highlights
The journey starts with ancient Egypt's treasures like royal jewels and sarcophagi, then moves through rooms dedicated to the city's Greco-Roman founders, complete with statues salvaged from the harbor. Don't miss the hauntingly beautiful Fayum portraits or the exhibits on more recent royal families.
