The Royal Mummies Hall
About This Museum
Tucked away in the sprawling complex of the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization, the Royal Mummies Hall feels less like a traditional gallery and more like a sacred space. You descend into a climate-controlled, intentionally darkened chamber, where time seems to stand still. Here, under soft, reverent lighting, lie the actual rulers of Egypt's New Kingdom—pharaohs and queens who walked the earth over three millennia ago. It’s an incredibly intimate and humbling encounter with history that is both awe-inspiring and deeply personal.
Collection Highlights
The hall's undeniable stars are the remarkably preserved mummies of powerful figures like Ramses II and Queen Hatshepsut. They are displayed in sleek, modern cases that put you face-to-face with history, their linen wrappings and strands of hair still visible. Surrounding them are the dazzling gold coffins and intricate funerary masks that were meant to protect them on their journey to the afterlife.
Visitor Information
It's located in Old Cairo, easily reached by taxi or even the metro (get off at Mar Girgis station). Be prepared for airport-level security at the entrance. The cool, dim atmosphere inside demands a moment of adjustment but adds to the profound sense of reverence.
Architecture & Building
The museum itself is a striking contemporary structure with clean lines and vast geometric forms, sitting on the edge of a lake. The mummies hall is specifically designed as a subterranean, vault-like space to enhance the feeling of entering a timeless tomb.
