About This Museum

Well now, if you want to understand Võru, you have to start right here on the central square. It was all laid out back in 1784, following a decree from Catherine the Great herself, and it's been the town's living room ever since. You can almost hear the echoes of old market days and see the ghosts of farmers haggling over their wares. It’s not a museum you walk through so much as a story you stand in the middle of.

Collection Highlights

The main 'exhibits' are the lovely, colourful wooden buildings that frame the square, each with its own tale. Look for the striking white Town Hall standing proudly at one end—it’s seen more than a few town meetings in its day. And don't miss Kreutzwald's statue; our local doctor and the man who gave us our national epic, Kalevipoeg, still keeps a watchful eye over things.

Visitor Information

The best time to visit is on a market day when the place truly comes alive, but even on a quiet afternoon, it's perfect for a slow stroll. Grab a bench under the trees or a coffee from one of the nearby shops and just soak it all in.

Architecture & Building

You're looking at classic Estonian wooden architecture for the most part—those charming two-storey houses painted in soft yellows, greens, and pinks. The Town Hall itself is a more formal, stately building from that same period, providing a beautiful focal point.
