TYPA letterpress and paper art centre
About This Museum
People come to TYPA not just to see old printing machines, but to feel the satisfying clunk of a press and the texture of handmade paper. It’s a wonderfully hands-on place where history feels alive and ready for you to create with. You can wander through a working print shop filled with the smell of ink and lead type, then explore exhibits on everything from bookbinding to paper art. It’s less a silent museum and more an active workshop that celebrates the beautiful, tactile world of printed communication.
Collection Highlights
Don't miss the massive collection of working historic presses, including a Heidelberg Windmill. You can also try your hand at typesetting and printing your own souvenir on one of their smaller tabletop presses.
Visitor Information
It's tucked away in a repurposed industrial building near Tartu's city center, so keep an eye out for the sign. Booking a workshop in advance is highly recommended if you want the full, ink-under-your-fingernails experience.
Architecture & Building
The centre is housed in a charmingly unassuming, red-brick former factory or warehouse, which gives it an authentic, no-frills workshop atmosphere that perfectly suits its purpose.
