About This Museum

Right here on the Bay Road in Basseterre, tucked away in one of the old government buildings, you'll find the National Museum. It's a wonderfully compact place that feels more like stepping into a well-kept secret than a formal institution. Inside, the story of our island unfolds, from the ancient Kalinago peoples all the way through to sugar, slavery, and sovereignty. You can easily spend an hour or two getting pleasantly lost in our shared past.

Collection Highlights

Look for the heavy lead weights used to cheat during sugar sales and the fascinating petroglyphs carved by our island's first inhabitants. Don't miss the display on traditional Carnival characters; it really captures the spirit of our people.

Visitor Information

It's a small museum, so it won't take over your whole dayβ€”perfect for a morning visit before lunch. Just pop in; it's very straightforward and welcoming.

Architecture & Building

Housed in the old Treasury Building from 1894, it's a fine example of Caribbean colonial architecture with its deep verandas and sturdy stone construction meant to withstand the elements.
