The French Museum

About This Museum

Tucked away in the charming harbor of Fáskrúðsfjörður, The French Museum is a little slice of history you'd completely miss if you blinked. It’s not some grand, imposing institution but a wonderfully personal space that tells the incredible story of the French fishermen who made this remote fjord their seasonal home. I was completely drawn into the world of handwritten ledgers, weathered black-and-white photos, and the distinct blue-and-white striped jerseys. You can almost hear the whispers of Breton and feel the salt spray from their long journeys across the sea.

Collection Highlights

Look for the beautifully preserved apothecary jars from the French hospital and the intricate ship models. The personal artifacts, like letters sent back home, are what truly bring the era to life.

Visitor Information

It's right on Hafnargata, the main street, so it's impossible to miss. Just pop in—it's cozy enough to see everything in under an hour, making it a perfect stop before grabbing a coffee by the water.

Architecture & Building

Housed in a classic, black timber-clad Icelandic building that feels perfectly at home in the fjord, it was originally part of the French hospital complex.
