The Frank McCourt Museum
About This Museum
You might not expect a museum dedicated to an author to be tucked away in his old schoolhouse, but that's the charm of the Frank McCourt Museum. It sits right inside the former Leamy School, the very place he immortalized in 'Angela's Ashes'. Stepping inside feels less like entering a formal institution and more like walking directly into the pages of that book, surrounded by the echoes of a tough but spirited Limerick childhood. The air in those old classrooms still seems to hum with the ghosts of schooldays long past.
Collection Highlights
You can see Frank's actual teaching cane and his old typewriter, but it's the personal letters and family photos that really pull you in. One of the most moving exhibits is a recreation of the cramped, damp McCourt family kitchen from Roden Lane, complete with the makeshift bed and a single dying ember in the hearth.
Visitor Information
I'm afraid you've just missed it; the museum has now permanently closed its doors. Leamy House stands quiet again, its stories folded back into the brickwork.
Architecture & Building
It was housed in Leamy House, a sturdy, red-brick Victorian building that once served as a charity school. It had that classic, no-nonsense 19th-century lookβtall windows, high ceilings, and floors that creaked with a century of history.
