THE DREDZEN SHOP & HOUSE MUSEUM (GET TICKET AT INFO)
About This Museum
Tucked away on Pilgrim's Rest's main street, this place is a perfectly preserved time capsule from the 1890s gold rush. You step right into the original Dredzen family shop and home, where the wooden counters are still stacked with goods and the living quarters feel like the family just stepped out for a moment. Itβs incredibly intimate, not like a sterile museum at all. The whole experience makes you feel like you've slipped back in time over a century.
Collection Highlights
You can see the original stock of tins, bottles, and patent medicines still on the shelves, and personal items like Mr. Dredzen's spectacles are lying around as if waiting for him. The old-fashioned kitchen with its cast-iron stove and simple furnishings really paints a picture of daily life back then.
Visitor Information
Just a heads-up, you need to grab your ticket from the info office down the road firstβyou can't buy it at the door. It's a small detail that makes the adventure feel a bit more authentic.
Architecture & Building
It's a classic, unassuming corrugated iron building from the late Victorian era, typical of the mining towns that popped up across South Africa.
