Struthof
About This Museum
Up in the Vosges mountains, not far from the Alsatian wine route, you'll find a place that holds one of France's most somber histories. The Struthof camp sits on this isolated hillside, the only Nazi concentration camp built on what is now French soil. Walking through the gate, you can still see the original prison block, the crematorium, and the chillingly steep 'staircase of death' where prisoners were forced to carry heavy stones. It’s a quiet, powerful reminder of what happened here, a stark contrast to the beautiful surrounding forests.
Collection Highlights
The exhibits aren't behind fancy glass; they're in the very barracks where prisoners slept, using photographs and personal objects to tell individual stories. You'll see the original gas chamber, disguised as a shower room, which stands as a silent testament to the atrocities committed.
Visitor Information
Wear good shoes for the steep paths and be prepared for changing mountain weather. It's a deeply moving experience, so give yourself time to process it all afterwards.
Architecture & Building
The site consists of sparse, functional wooden barracks and stone administrative buildings, all built with brutal efficiency by the prisoners themselves on the side of a mountain.
