South Dakota Art Museum
About This Museum
Tucked away on the campus of South Dakota State University in Brookings, this gem feels like a well-kept secret. You walk in and are immediately struck by the light-filled, modern space that somehow still feels cozy and inviting. Itβs a place that truly celebrates the spirit of the Northern Plains, with a collection that feels deeply connected to the land and its people. I always leave feeling like I've discovered something new about this region, even if I've visited a dozen times before.
Collection Highlights
The heart of the museum is its stunning collection of Harvey Dunn paintings, which capture the raw beauty and grit of pioneer life with such emotional power. They also have a wonderful display of Native American art, including Marghab Linens, and rotating exhibits that often feature fantastic contemporary artists from the region.
Visitor Information
Best of all? Admission is completely free, and there's plenty of parking right nearby. It's the perfect cultural pit stop if you're traveling through eastern South Dakota.
Architecture & Building
The building itself is a great example of clean, late-mid-century modern design, with soaring ceilings and huge windows that flood the galleries with natural light.
