South Bannock County Historical Center and Museum
About This Museum
Folks wander into our little museum on Main Street for all sorts of reasons—some to escape the afternoon heat, others chasing a family name, and many just curious about the town that sprouted from these hot springs. You can feel the layers of time here, from the Shoshone-Bannock peoples who first cherished these waters to the railroad workers and homesteaders who followed. It’s less a sterile exhibit and more a conversation with the past, filled with personal stories and everyday treasures. Most leave with a deeper sense of this valley, understanding that Lava Hot Springs was always more than just a pit stop.
Collection Highlights
You'll find Chief Pocatello's peace pipe, early 1900s swimming costumes that show how folks enjoyed the springs, and a wonderfully detailed model of the old Oregon Short Line Railroad depot that was the lifeblood of this town.
