About This Museum

Tucked away on the slopes of Table Mountain, right next to the historic Gardens shul, this museum tells a story that's uniquely Cape Town. It weaves together the threads of Jewish life that arrived from Lithuania and other parts of Europe, stitching them into the complex fabric of South African history. You'll find personal letters, photographs, and artifacts that speak of journeys by ship and the establishment of new lives as traders and community builders. It’s a deeply human account of resilience and contribution, set against the backdrop of a changing nation.

Collection Highlights

Look for the beautifully restored Cheva Kadisha carriage, used for Jewish burials in the early 1900s. The 'From Immigrant to Citizen' exhibit powerfully traces family journeys, while interactive displays connect you to the community's role in fighting apartheid.
