Salt Museum
About This Museum
People come to the Salt Museum not just to learn about salt, but to understand the soul of this place, where the lagoon meets the sky. You quickly realize it's about a way of life, one that has been painstakingly preserved through generations of salt farmers. The heart of the experience is walking through the restored salt pans right outside, seeing firsthand how the sun and wind transform seawater into gleaming white crystals. It’s a humble yet profoundly moving tribute to an industry that shaped an entire region.
Collection Highlights
Don't miss the traditional wooden tools used for harvesting, like the long-handled skoupas, which feel wonderfully worn from decades of use. The photographs of the 'alates,' the salt workers, tell a powerful story of resilience under the scorching sun.
Visitor Information
It's perched right on the edge of the Mesolongi lagoon in Tourlida—the drive out there is an attraction in itself. Wear comfortable shoes because you'll want to explore the outdoor grounds.
Architecture & Building
The building itself is a beautifully restored, low-slung stone structure that once served as a salt warehouse, blending perfectly into the flat, expansive landscape.
