Regional Museum of Art
About This Museum
If you wander into the heart of Sumy, to Pokrovskaya Square, you'll find a place that holds more than just paintings; it holds our regional soul. The museum carries the name of Nikanor Onatsky, a man whose passion for art literally built this collection from the ground up. Stepping inside feels like walking through a visual diary of our area, from the solemn faces in 18th-century portraits to the vibrant, sometimes chaotic, works of modern Ukrainian artists. It’s a quiet sanctuary where you can feel the layers of time.
Collection Highlights
You can't miss the powerful icons salvaged from local villages, their gold leaf still catching the light. Then there's Shevchenko's raw sketches, full of emotion, and a room dedicated to our own 'Sumy school' of painters who captured the unique light of our Siverskyi Donets riverlands.
Visitor Information
It's right there on Pokrovskaya Square, number one—you can't really miss the building. Pop in any day except Monday; it's the perfect escape for a quiet afternoon.
Architecture & Building
The building itself is a classic piece of Sumy's architectural tapestry, a dignified and somewhat austere pre-revolutionary structure that speaks of its time, with high ceilings and creaking wooden floors that add to its charm.
