Port Museum of Dunkirk
About This Museum
You know how most museums feel a bit stuffy? This one is the complete opposite. Housed in this massive, red-brick former tobacco warehouse right on the old port, it feels like stepping into a giant storybook of Dunkerque. I was completely drawn in by the interactive exhibits—you can virtually guide a ship into the harbor or listen to personal stories from the war. The whole place has this incredible, tangible energy that makes history feel immediate and alive.
Collection Highlights
The highlight for me was the huge, intricate model of the city's port; you press a button and different sections light up to show how it operates. They also have an amazing collection focusing on the 'Operation Dynamo' evacuation in WWII, with real objects and testimonies that are genuinely moving.
Visitor Information
It's super easy to find at 9 Quai de la Citadelle, just follow the water! Definitely set aside a good two hours because there's a lot to see and do.
Architecture & Building
It's this grand, industrial brick warehouse from the old days, with huge windows that flood the space with light and give you these fantastic views of the docks.
