Up in the northern reaches of Ilocos Norte, the landscape around Paoay shifts dramatically from the familiar tropical green to a sprawling, almost Martian terrain of golden sand. Here at the Paoay Sand Dunes, the main attraction isn't found inside four walls but out in the open air, where the wind sculpts the earth into rolling hills and valleys. Visitors spend their days roaring across the vast expanse on quad bikes or clinging to the roll bars of rugged 4x4 jeeps, kicking up clouds of fine sand. The thrill continues with sandboarding, a rush of adrenaline as you slide down the steep slopes, often punctuated by sightings of massive bamboo sculptures that rise from the dunes like skeletal giants.
