Oregon Rail Heritage Center
About This Museum
The Oregon Rail Heritage Center has its roots in the 1970s, born from the passion of local volunteers determined to save Portland's iconic steam locomotives from the scrapyard. Today, it's a bustling, hands-on museum where you can often smell oil and hot metal. The star attractions are three massive, restored steam engines that look like they've just rolled out of a bygone era. Itβs not a stuffy, 'look but don't touch' kind of place; you can feel the history here.
Collection Highlights
You can't miss the trio of Southern Pacific and Spokane, Portland & Seattle steam locomotives, including the magnificent SP 4449 Daylight that still powers excursion trips. Inside, you'll find beautifully restored passenger cars to peek into and an impressive display of vintage railroad artifacts.
Visitor Information
Best of all? Admission is by donation. They fire up one of the smaller engines in the shop on most weekends, so try to stop by then for some real action.
Architecture & Building
Housed in a modern, purpose-built industrial shed with huge doors and high ceilings that make the massive trains inside feel right at home.
