About This Museum

Standing proudly in the heart of downtown Sioux Falls, the Old Courthouse Museum is a beautiful sandstone landmark that has presided over the city's main public square since the 1890s. Today, instead of judges and juries, its grand courtrooms are filled with fascinating exhibits that tell the story of the region. You can explore everything from pioneer life and Native American heritage to the development of Sioux Falls itself. It’s a place where you can literally walk through history, from the ornate rotunda down to the old jail cells in the basement.

Collection Highlights

Don't miss walking into one of the restored courtrooms or checking out the recreated 19th-century schoolroom. The museum also has some surprisingly poignant exhibits on early settlers and a great collection of historic photographs that really bring old Sioux Falls to life.

Visitor Information

Best of all, admission is completely free, though donations are always welcome. It's open Tuesday through Saturday, making it a perfect stop while you're exploring downtown.

Architecture & Building

It's a magnificent example of Richardsonian Romanesque architecture, built from local pink quartzite sandstone, complete with a striking clock tower and intricate stone carvings.
