About This Museum

You won't believe this place I found just outside of Salisbury – it's the North Carolina Transportation Museum, and it's absolutely massive, spread across 57 acres of what was once a real steam locomotive repair shop. The heart of it all is this incredible, fully restored roundhouse where you can walk right up to towering steam engines and gorgeous antique cars. We even got to take a short train ride on an old passenger car, which was such a fun way to see more of the grounds.

Collection Highlights

The star of the show is definitely the collection of historic locomotives inside the roundhouse, but don't miss the exhibit of classic automobiles and all the smaller artifacts that tell the story of how we've gotten around.

Visitor Information

It's super easy to find at 1 Samuel Spencer Drive in Spencer. Definitely check their website for train ride schedules before you go, as they often run seasonally.

Architecture & Building

The main buildings are the original brick structures from the old Southern Railway's Spencer Shops, with the huge, dramatic roundhouse being the most impressive.
