National Music Museum
About This Museum
You might not expect to find one of the world's most significant collections of musical instruments in a small South Dakota town, but that's precisely the magic of the National Music Museum. It feels less like a static archive and more like a symphony of global history told through beautifully crafted objects. From a 17th-century Stradivarius guitar to wild, experimental creations from the Jazz Age, every corner has a story. It’s a place where you can trace the entire evolution of sound, all under one roof.
Collection Highlights
The collection is staggering in its scope, featuring treasures like the very first known saxophone made by Adolphe Sax himself and an ornate harpsichord once owned by a Polish king. One of their most famous pieces is the 'Harrison' violin, a masterpiece by Giuseppe Guarneri del Gesù.
Visitor Information
It's located right in Vermillion, on the University of South Dakota campus—easy to find and well worth the detour. Check their website for current hours before you go, as they can vary with the academic calendar.
Architecture & Building
Housed in a stately former Carnegie library building, its classic, columned facade gives way to surprisingly modern and intimate galleries inside.
