Tucked away on a quiet lane in Verkhovyna, the very heart of the Hutsul region, you'll find the Muzey 'Khata-Staya'. This isn't your typical grand museum; it feels more like stepping directly into the home of a shepherd from a century ago. The air inside is cool and carries the ancient scent of woodsmoke and hay. Every object here, from the massive clay oven to the hand-carved wooden tools, tells a story of daily life and survival in the Carpathians.
Collection Highlights
The main room is dominated by a huge, whitewashed 'pich' oven, which was the true heart of the home for cooking, warmth, and even sleeping. You'll see authentic Hutsul wool 'lizhnyky' (blankets), heavy sheepskin coats, and all the intricate tools needed for cheese-making and woodworking. It’s a complete picture of a self-sufficient mountain household.
Visitor Information
It's best to call ahead if you can, as hours can be flexible. When you go, wear comfortable shoes for the uneven path and be prepared for a few steps—it’s an old building, after all. The experience is intimate and feels wonderfully genuine.
Architecture & Building
It's a classic Hutsul timber house, built low to the ground with thick logs to withstand the harsh mountain winters. The roof is steeply pitched and heavily thatched, looking like a shaggy hat pulled down over the structure.
