Museum Wahanarata
About This Museum
Tucked away just behind the grand walls of the Kraton, the Museum Wahanarata is a hidden gem that feels like stepping directly into the Sultan's garage. Forget sterile displays; here, you're walking among a fleet of gorgeous vintage carriages and classic cars that were actually used by the royal family. I was completely captivated by the intricate carvings on the horse-drawn carriages, each one telling a story of ceremony and tradition. It’s an intimate look at the daily life and pageantry of the Yogyakarta Sultanate that you won't find anywhere else.
Collection Highlights
The collection shines with its royal vehicles, from ornately decorated kereta kuda (horse carriages) like the Kyai Garudayaksa to early-model automobiles that were state-of-the-art in their day. Don't miss seeing the personal cars once driven by past Sultans.
