About This Museum

Believe it or not, this charming little station was once the departure point for millions of tons of Ombilin coal, the 'black gold' that built this city. Today, the old ticket windows are silent, but the building itself is the star exhibit, a perfectly preserved portal to the late 19th century. You can almost hear the ghosts of steam locomotives hissing in the yard outside. It’s a wonderfully intimate museum that feels more like stepping onto a forgotten film set than walking through a formal gallery.

Collection Highlights

The main hall is dominated by an impressive collection of vintage telegraph equipment and heavy, ornate ticket stamps. Don't miss the detailed dioramas showing how coal was transported from mine to train, or the old stationmaster's office frozen in time.

Visitor Information

It's right in the heart of town on Jl. A. Yani, easy to spot and even easier to wander through in under an hour. The staff are often locals with great stories, so don't be shy to ask questions.

Architecture & Building

A classic Dutch colonial-era railway station with its signature high, arched windows, deep overhanging eaves to handle the tropical rain, and those distinctive creamy yellow walls you see all over Sawahlunto.
