Museum Railway at Kovjoki Station

About This Museum

Tucked away in the Finnish countryside near Vaasa, the Museum Railway at Kovjoki Station is a beautiful little time capsule dedicated to the age of steam. It all started with a group of passionate volunteers who saved this stretch of the former Vaskiluoto–Kovjoki line from being lost forever. Stepping onto the platform feels like you've slipped back into the 1950s, surrounded by the gentle hiss of steam and the rich scent of coal and oil. It’s a wonderfully intimate and hands-on experience, far removed from the sterility of a larger museum.

Collection Highlights

The star of the show is undoubtedly their magnificent Tk3 class steam locomotive, No. 455, which you can often see fired up and breathing life into the past. Alongside it sits a charming collection of vintage wooden-bodied passenger coaches and freight cars, each with its own story. Don't miss the perfectly preserved station building itself, which now acts as a small museum filled with timetables, old tickets, and railway paraphernalia.

Visitor Information

This is very much a living museum run by enthusiasts, so it's best to check their website for opening days, especially if you want to catch one of their 'steam-up' weekends when everything is in motion. The atmosphere is wonderfully informal—you're free to wander, ask questions, and truly immerse yourself.

Architecture & Building

The heart of the museum is the original Kovjoki station building, a classic example of early 20th-century Finnish wooden railway architecture with its distinctive red paint and white trim.
