Museum oil fields in Galicia
About This Museum
Tucked away in the rolling hills of western Ukraine, this place tells the story of a region that was actually a global petroleum pioneer long before Texas or Saudi Arabia entered the scene. You get to wander through a sprawling open-air site where weathered wooden drilling rigs, known as 'kibels', creak in the wind, and massive, grease-stained extraction machinery sits exactly as it was left. The atmosphere is strangely peaceful yet deeply industrial, a quiet testament to the generations who worked these fields. It’s a completely unique and surprisingly moving look at a chapter of history you likely never knew existed.
Collection Highlights
The star of the show is the functional reconstruction of an 1850s-style oil derrick that you can sometimes see in action. Don't miss the collection of antique kerosene lamps and the incredibly detailed models showing how they dug and operated early oil wells by hand.
Visitor Information
It's located just outside the village of Pniv, so having your own transport is pretty much essential. Wear sturdy shoes because you'll be doing a lot of walking on gravel paths between the outdoor exhibits.
Architecture & Building
The main building is a simple, functional structure that feels like it's part of the industrial landscape itself, surrounded by all the authentic machinery and towering wooden rigs scattered across the grassy field.
