Museum of the Cherokee People
About This Museum
People come here for all sorts of reasons. Some are tracing their own family roots, while others just want to understand the true story of the Cherokee beyond the history books. You'll find yourself lingering over cases filled with intricate rivercane baskets and listening to the soft, melodic sounds of the Cherokee language from a nearby interactive display. It’s more than artifacts; it's a living presence. By the time you leave, you feel the weight and resilience of a people who have called these mountains home for millennia.
Collection Highlights
Don't miss the exhibit on Sequoyah and his syllabary—seeing that original writing system is humbling. The 'Story of the Cherokees' walk-through is powerful, but it's the holographic storytellers that truly captivate, sharing ancient legends as if they were right in the room with you.
Visitor Information
You'll find us right on Tsali Boulevard in Cherokee, a stone's throw from the Qualla Boundary boundary. It's easy to spend a whole afternoon here, so take your time.
Architecture & Building
The building itself has a modern, almost mountainous feel with lots of wood and stone, designed to feel like it belongs right here in the Smokies.
