About This Museum

Everyone comes to Melaka for the history and the food, but I stumbled upon this gem almost by accident. Tucked away in a grand colonial-era building, the Museum of Royal Malaysian Customs is a total surprise package. Forget dusty displays; here you'll find an absolutely wild collection of contraband, from elaborately concealed weapons to vintage opium pipes. It's a completely unique and fascinating look into a side of Malaysian history you never knew existed.

Collection Highlights

The sheer ingenuity of smugglers is on full display with hollowed-out high heels and fake petrol tanks. Don't miss the massive taxidermied tiger, seized from a smuggling attempt, or the room dedicated to forged goods that will make you question every 'designer' bag you've ever seen.

Visitor Information

It's right near Merdeka Square in Melaka, so it's super easy to pop into while exploring the historic core. Best of all? Entry is completely free, making it one of the best value stops in the city.

Architecture & Building

Housed in a beautifully preserved whitewashed colonial building with tall windows and a classic veranda, it feels like stepping back into another era before you even step inside.
