Museum of Popular Architecture of Gorj
About This Museum
Tucked away just outside Târgu Jiu, this open-air museum feels like stepping through a portal into the old Gorj. It's not a single building, but an entire hillside village meticulously assembled from original structures saved from villages now lost to time or progress. You'll wander down a dirt path past sturdy oak gateways and whitewashed walls, with the scent of woodsmoke and wildflowers hanging in the air. It’s a quiet, profoundly peaceful place that lets the craftsmanship of our ancestors speak for itself.
Collection Highlights
You can't miss the massive 'Vatra lui Gheorghe' house with its hipped roof and deep porch, or the tiny, one-room 'Căsoaia' cottage that shows how humbly most folk lived. Look for the fulling mill down by the creek—it still works during demonstrations—and the beautifully carved wooden cross inside the 'Sfântul Gheorghe' church.
Visitor Information
It's all outdoors, so wear good shoes for walking the grassy paths. The place is open most days, but it's always wise to check local times before you head out, especially outside of summer.
Architecture & Building
The buildings here are classic examples of Gorj vernacular architecture: low-slung houses with high-pitched shingle roofs, enormous porches held up by carved wooden pillars, and stone foundations built to last centuries.
