Museum of Money
About This Museum
You probably wouldn't guess that one of the most fascinating museums in Europe is tucked away in a former diplomatic embassy in Montenegro's old royal capital. I was completely captivated by its story, which unfolds through centuries of currency from Illyrian coins to Yugoslav dinars. The real showstopper is the colossal 20-kilo gold ingot you're actually allowed to try and lift. It’s a surprisingly hands-on journey through the economic soul of the Balkans.
Collection Highlights
The collection brilliantly connects money to power, from Venetian perpers and medieval Serbian coins to the first Montenegrin banknotes printed during King Nikola's reign. Don't miss the chance to feel the impossible weight of that pure gold bar in the vault.
Visitor Information
It's right on the main street in Cetinje, so you can't miss it—look for the grand, pale yellow building with green shutters. Pop in for an hour; it's a perfect, insightful break from all the palace and monastery tours.
Architecture & Building
Housed in a beautiful, historic building that once served as the French Embassy, it's a stately example of Cetinje's classic architecture with elegant symmetry and a dignified presence.
