Museum of History and Railway Engineering of the Southern Railway
About This Museum
You'd never guess it, but tucked away in Kharkiv is a place where you can stand on the footplate of a real Soviet steam locomotive, feeling the sheer size of it. This museum isn't just about machines; it's the living, breathing story of the Southern Railway itself. I love how they've preserved everything from ornate station clocks to the humble tools of a track-layer. It’s a proper love letter to the people who kept this region connected.
Collection Highlights
The star is definitely the FD21-3001, a massive 'Felix Dzerzhinsky' class steam engine from 1940. Inside, you'll find fragile timetables from the Tsarist era next to sturdy Soviet-era conductor uniforms and a collection of beautifully preserved signal lamps.
Visitor Information
It's easy to find over on Yevhena Kotliara Street. Just be sure to check their opening times before you head over, as they can be a bit particular.
Architecture & Building
Housed in what feels like an old railway administrative building—it's all solid, functional brickwork that speaks of its industrial purpose, not built for show but for work.
