Musée des musiques et instruments de l'Océan Indien
About This Museum
Tucked away in the lush, mountainous cirque of Salazie, this museum feels less like an institution and more like a curated secret. It’s a place where the very air seems to vibrate with the forgotten rhythms of the Indian Ocean. You don't just see the instruments; you learn the stories of migration, slavery, and cultural fusion they represent. It’s an intimate and deeply resonant experience that connects you directly to the soul of the islands.
Collection Highlights
Look for the beautifully weathered kayamb, a flat rattle shaken during séga dances, its seeds still whispering secrets. The massive, single-skinned ravanne drum, stretched over a wooden frame, seems to await only the heat of a fire to tighten its hide for performance. Don't miss the maloya drums, their presence a powerful testament to Réunion's African heritage and its history of resistance.
Visitor Information
Heads up, it's currently listed as temporarily closed—a real shame as it's one of Réunion's unique gems. When it reopens, you'll find it at 4 Rue de la Cayenne in Salazie. Given its location in one of the island's most dramatic landscapes, combining a visit with a hike through the surrounding waterfalls would make for a perfect day.
Architecture & Building
Housed in a charming, traditional Creole case with its signature wide veranda and ornate lace-like woodwork, the building itself is a piece of local heritage. The weathered wood and corrugated roof blend seamlessly into the village, making the collection feel perfectly at home.
