Musée des explorations du monde
About This Museum
Perched in the old Suquet quarter, this place has a story that starts long before it became a museum. The building itself, the Château de la Castre, is a medieval watchtower that once kept a stern eye over the bay. Inside, you'll find a wonderfully eclectic collection amassed by a 19th-century Dutch aristocrat who fell in love with Cannes. It’s a cabinet of curiosities where Riviera landscapes hang beside exotic treasures from his global travels. The whole place feels like stepping into the mind of a passionate collector from another era.
Collection Highlights
Look for the delicate oil paintings capturing the Cannes coastline before the modern boom—you'll see olive groves where grand hotels stand today. Then, wander through the intimate rooms filled with ancient musical instruments and fascinating ethnographic objects from the South Pacific and the Americas.
Visitor Information
Don't miss climbing the narrow spiral staircase to the top of the tower; the reward is arguably one of the best panoramic views of Cannes, stretching from the Lerins Islands all the way to the Esterel mountains.
Architecture & Building
A sturdy medieval stone tower, part of an old castle complex, with thick walls and a classic Romanesque look that speaks to its original defensive purpose.
