Musée De L'école De Bothoa
About This Museum
Tucked away on a quiet country road in rural Brittany, this place is a perfectly preserved 1930s schoolhouse that feels frozen in time. You step right into the past here—the main classroom still has the original wooden desks with inkwells, a giant cast-iron stove, and even the faint smell of chalk dust. It's incredibly easy to imagine the stern teacher presiding over a room full of children in smocks. They've even recreated the teacher's living quarters upstairs, which gives you a real sense of how isolated that life could be. It’s a surprisingly moving and intimate glimpse into a world not so long ago.
Collection Highlights
The heart of it is the main classroom, complete with old-fashioned maps, moral lessons on the walls, and those wonderful double-seated wooden desks. Don't miss trying to write with a dip pen and ink at one of them—it's much harder than it looks! Upstairs, the teacher's simple apartment feels like she just stepped out for a moment.
Visitor Information
It's best to check their website for opening times as they can be seasonal. For the full experience, try to go when they have a guided tour—the stories really bring the place to life.
Architecture & Building
It's a classic, sturdy stone Breton building that looks exactly like what you'd picture for a village schoolhouse from that era.
