Musée de l'Abbaye / donations Guy Bardone - René Genis, Saint-Claude
About This Museum
You might not expect to find a world-class collection of modern art tucked away in the Jura mountains, but that's the magic of this place. It all sits on the very spot where a mighty 5th-century abbey once stood, with its ancient stone foundations now forming the museum's dramatic lower level. Upstairs, the light-filled rooms showcase the incredible personal collections of two local sons made good, painters Guy Bardone and René Genis. Wandering through, you get this intimate feeling of being invited into their private circle, surrounded by works from friends like Dufy and Vlaminck.
Collection Highlights
Look for the vibrant, sun-drenched landscapes by Raoul Dufy and the bold Fauvist colors of Maurice de Vlaminck. The real treat, though, is seeing Bardone's own delicate works alongside pieces by modern masters like Picasso and Zadkine, all collected through a lifetime of friendship.
Visitor Information
Find it right on the main square in Saint-Claude; you can't miss the striking modern facade built right into the historic abbey site. It's a wonderful stop to break up a drive through the mountains.
