Mulawarman Museum
About This Museum
If you stand in the heart of Tenggarong, you'll find yourself face-to-face with a grand white building that whispers tales of Kutai's royal past. This was originally the palace of the Sultan, built by the Dutch back in the colonial era, and stepping inside feels like walking through layers of history. You won't just find dusty relics here; the place is alive with ornately carved cannons, delicate Chinese ceramics traded up the Mahakam River, and the lingering presence of wayang kulit puppets from its famed theater. It’s more than a museum—it’s the enduring heart of the sultanate.
Collection Highlights
Look for the formidable keris daggers and royal heirlooms that speak of a warrior culture, alongside exquisite ceramic pieces that tell a story of ancient trade routes. The classic puppet theater collection is a vibrant centerpiece, showcasing the art that brought epic tales to life.
Visitor Information
You'll find it easily on Jalan Diponegoro. It's a good idea to set aside a couple of hours to wander properly, and don't be shy to ask the attendants—they often know the best stories that aren't written on the plaques.
