About This Museum

Tucked away on Calle José de la Obaldía in the heart of the old city, the Mola Museum feels more like a well-kept secret than a formal institution. It’s a place dedicated entirely to the story of the mola, those incredible layered textiles that are so much more than just 'Panama's national dress'. You can almost feel the generations of Guna women in the room, their hands patiently snipping and stitching these vibrant narratives from cloth. The museum doesn't just display molas; it unfolds their history, from ancient body painting traditions to the intricate reverse-appliqué art form we know today.

Collection Highlights

One of my favorite exhibits is 'Molas: de lo espiritual a lo cotidiano', which beautifully shows how molas depict everything from cosmic visions and creation myths to scenes of modern life. You'll see stunning examples where geometric patterns hold deep spiritual meaning right alongside ones that humorously illustrate bicycles or airplanes. They even have some of the very first, simpler mola designs from over a century ago, which really lets you appreciate the evolution of this living art.

Visitor Information

It's easy to find on two floors in a restored Casco Viejo building. The staff are wonderfully knowledgeable—don't be shy about asking them questions, as they often have personal stories about the pieces. It’s the kind of intimate spot where you can easily spend an hour soaking it all in without feeling rushed.

Architecture & Building

Housed in a beautifully restored, traditional Casco Antiguo townhouse with high ceilings and those classic, heavy wooden doors that open right onto the street.
