Mining History Centre
About This Museum
Believe it or not, this sprawling museum of light and life was once the Fosse Delloye, a deep, dark coal mine that employed over a thousand workers. Today, the red brick pithead buildings and towering headframes stand as a powerful monument to an entire way of life. You can almost hear the ghosts of past shifts in the clatter of the original sorting belts and the immense winding engine. It’s a place that doesn't just tell you about history—it lets you walk directly into its shoes.
Collection Highlights
The heart of the experience is descending 15 meters into a reconstructed coal face, where you feel the cool, damp air and see the tools miners used. Above ground, marvel at the 'Sergent' mining shovel, a beast of a machine, and explore exhibits on daily life, from lunch pails to personal safety lamps.
Visitor Information
Wear comfortable shoes because you'll be covering a lot of ground, both indoors and out. Booking your underground tour in advance is a smart move, especially during school holidays.
