About This Museum
I was completely charmed by this place—it's the beautifully restored childhood home of Mehmet Ali Pasha, the Albanian-born Ottoman ruler who later became the Viceroy of Egypt and founded its last royal dynasty. Wandering through the rooms, you get a real sense of his incredible life story, which is deeply intertwined with Kavala's own history. The house is perched right on the peninsula in the old town, with some rooms offering breathtaking, postcard-perfect views of the harbor. It feels less like a sterile museum and more like stepping directly into a wealthy 18th-century merchant's home.
Collection Highlights
You can see his personal belongings, original furniture, and even his ceremonial weapons, but what stuck with me was the recreated harem section and the detailed family tree that connects him to so much 19th-century history.
