People make the journey to Medzhidi Tabia for a powerful dose of history and some of the most breathtaking views in northeastern Bulgaria. This remarkably preserved Ottoman-era fortress feels like stepping back in time, with its massive stone walls and silent cannons still facing the Danube. You can spend a wonderful hour or two wandering the grassy ramparts, peering into old ammunition storerooms, and imagining the soldiers who once stood guard here. It’s a place that manages to feel both grand and peacefully quiet, leaving you with a real sense of the past.
Collection Highlights
The star attractions are the original artillery pieces still in place on the ramparts, offering a perfect photo op with the river as a backdrop. Don't miss exploring the network of underground casemates, which were designed to protect troops and store supplies during a siege.
Visitor Information
It's an open-air site, so you can visit pretty much anytime during daylight hours; just wear good shoes for walking on uneven stone paths. The village of Kalipetrovo is a short drive from Silistra, and there's usually plenty of space to park nearby.

A classic example of late Ottoman military architecture, it's a six-pointed star-shaped fortress built from pale stone, featuring thick defensive walls, deep protective ditches, and vaulted brick chambers inside.
