About This Museum
People often wander into our little corner of Wailuku looking for the 'real' Maui, the one that exists beyond the resort beaches. They find it here, in the quiet halls of the Bailey House, a former mission home that has watched over the 'Īao Valley since 1833. You can feel the layers of history in this place—from the ancient Hawaiian artifacts to the missionary-era furniture. Most folks leave not just with a souvenir, but with a deeper sense of this island's soul.
Collection Highlights
The collection tells a rich story, from exquisite kapa cloth and stone adzes that speak of old Hawaiʻi to the heavy Koa wood furniture crafted by missionaries. Don't miss the native garden out back; it's a living exhibit of canoe plants that the first Polynesian voyagers brought with them.
Visitor Information
We're right there on Main Street in Wailuku—look for the charming old green and white building. Pop in, say hello, and if you're doing family research, ask about our library.
Architecture & Building
It's a classic example of a Hawaiian Mission House, built from hand-cut coral block and sturdy timber, reflecting the simple, practical style of early 19th-century New England missionaries.
