Lost City Museum
About This Museum
The Lost City Museum has a truly unique origin story, born from the race to save history during the Hoover Dam's construction in the 1930s. As the dam's reservoir began to fill, it threatened to submerge ancient Puebloan (formerly known as Anasazi) villages, so this museum was quickly built to preserve the artifacts being unearthed. You can literally walk through full-scale replicas of pueblo dwellings right on the site of an original archaeological dig. It’s a place that feels deeply connected to the landscape it protects.
Collection Highlights
The heart of the collection is a stunning array of Puebloan pottery, from delicate painted bowls to sturdy storage jars. You'll also find a remarkable assortment of tools—stone knives, metates for grinding corn, and intricate woven sandals—that paint a vivid picture of daily life centuries ago.
Visitor Information
It's a small but fascinating stop that won't take over your whole day, perfect for a couple of hours. Don't miss wandering around the outside to see the reconstructed pueblos; it really helps you imagine what life was like here.
Architecture & Building
The building itself is a historic artifact, constructed largely from native sandstone and designed to mimic the pueblo style of the very cultures it showcases.
