You won't believe this, but the entire museum is built around the actual excavated foundation of the largest Viking longhouse ever discovered—seriously, the chieftain's house was 83 meters long! Walking into that massive, reconstructed hall with its turf roof and smoky atmosphere feels like stepping right into the 9th century. You can almost hear the old Norse sagas being told by the central fire. They don't just show you artifacts behind glass; you get to heft replica swords, feel the texture of woven clothes, and even smell the traditional food cooking.
Collection Highlights
The star of the show is definitely the full-scale replica of a Viking ship, which you can sometimes see being sailed on the nearby fjord. Inside, look for intricate jewelry, fearsome weapons, and everyday tools that tell a complete story of Viking life far beyond just raiding.
