Latvijas dzelzceļa vēstures muzejs
About This Museum
Would you believe one of the most impressive collections of historic trains in the Baltics is housed in a former roundhouse, where locomotives were once repaired? This isn't your typical quiet museum; it's a sprawling, hands-on playground for anyone fascinated by the power and history of the rails. You can climb aboard hulking Soviet-era steam engines, peek into the plush compartments of pre-war passenger carriages, and explore a vast array of freight wagons. The atmosphere is thick with the scent of oil and old wood, making the golden age of rail travel feel immediately present.
Collection Highlights
Highlights include a majestic L-3509 steam locomotive from 1948, an elegant salon-car used by Latvian state officials in the 1930s, and a fascinating display of railway uniforms and signaling equipment that tells the human stories behind the machines.
Visitor Information
It's incredibly family-friendly—kids are encouraged to climb on many of the engines and cars. Just head to Uzvaras bulvāris 2A; it's easy to spot by the trains parked outside.
Architecture & Building
The main building is a classic brick roundhouse, a circular structure with a towering central turntable that was essential for directing engines into different repair bays.
