La Maison du Camembert
About This Museum
People make the pilgrimage to this tiny Norman village for one reason: to pay homage to the king of cheeses. You walk in and are immediately hit by that wonderfully pungent, earthy aroma that tells you you're in the right place. It's less a sterile museum and more a lively tribute, telling the story of how a local farmer's creation became a global icon. I loved seeing the old wooden cheese molds and black-and-white photos of farmers from centuries past. It’s a small but utterly charming spot that completely immerses you in the world of Camembert.
Collection Highlights
The heart of the place is Marie Harel's original recipe, but the real stars are the antique tools—think heavy wooden presses and shallow cheese baskets—that show just how hands-on the process was. Don't miss the collection of vintage cheese labels; they're like little pieces of art!
Visitor Information
It's right on the main road in Camembert (the address is practically the whole town!). They have a great little shop, so you can grab a perfectly ripe wheel or two to take with you—just be prepared for your car to smell delicious all the way home.
Architecture & Building
It's housed in a classic, unassuming Norman stone building with a slate roof, looking much like a traditional farmhouse you'd see dotted throughout the countryside.
